WEST LAKE SCHOOL

(Picture unavailable. Unless someone out there has one ???)

West Lake School was established in 1881, and stood about half-way between Upper Lake and Lakeport, along the present Highway 29. George Lyons, Sr. gave one acre of land on which to build the school. It was consolidated with Lakeport Union Elementary in 1937. The school stood idle after it closed until the Seventh Day Adventist Church bought the property. They used it for their school for a few years until they built a modern school building.
A local man who had been a student at West Lake tells about the older boys who had trap lines which they tended on the way to school each morning. Sometimes they caught skunks and there was no time to go home to change their clothes!
